How it works:

Sand paint is gritty and abrasive, which deters chewing—think sand in your picnic lunch. Fencing keeps the beavers away from the trees entirely. Simple, cheap, and cheerful, this is an ideal DIY project, or I’d be glad to help.

Sand paint, done properly, can be nearly invisible and offer up to two years of protection.
If aesthetics are less of a concern, or you need a zero-maintenance solution, fencing is very effective when done correctly.
Available for individual trees or areas, exclusion fencing really lasts.
For site restoration or mitigation plantings, one application of sand paint could be enough to ensure three-year vegetation survival goals are met, and no fence removal needed.
