HOW WE SUPPORT LARGE SCALE PROCESS BASED RESTORATION
Project Implementation
A good project starts with a good site, which is why we always get boots on the ground and walk the site before agreeing to build. That dirt time ensures everything’s grounded in reality rather than floating in digital hyperspace, and sets the stage for success.
Having picked a good site, a competent practitioner should be able to pull on their boots and design 2 miles a day to the 65% level with only a phone and a drone, which is sufficient to permit and fund a project.
Putting that design to work requires seasoned professionals with thousands of structures behind them, in ecosystems from the Nevada desert to the Klamath Basin and coastal rainforests. We show up fully self-sufficient, require no site support, and live at the site until the job’s done. Overbuilt, under budget, on time, every time.

Field Training
Having trained over 400 people in the art and science of PBR both domestically and internationally, our team has the experience to ensure your staff, volunteers and partners get the very best, most current techniques and tools.
From one day introductions, to 3 day intensives, week-long work stays, and months-long deep immersions, we’ve been doing our part to spread the word of process-based restoration.
If you’d like to DIY, the best way for individuals to join the movement is probably the annual Build Like a Beaver training. For larger groups, organizational interest, and folks looking to peek farther down the rabbit hole, we’re often able to make room for motivated people.
If you’ve got funds, permits, and a project that needs doing, we’d love to hear from you about hosting a training at your site—get from 25-70 people to show up and swing a shovel, guided by the best instructors out there.
Fuel Load Reduction
We’ve had a hundred years of total fire suppression across the American West, and that experiment has been a dismal failure of land management. As a result, we’re all responsible for safeguarding our lands, creating wet fire breaks and wildlife refugia, and getting ready for the return for good fire.
Given how many insurance companies are bailing out of western states, how high premiums are rising, and how little landscape-scale work has been done, we can’t assume anybody’s coming to the rescue.
Luckily, every one of our projects includes a fuel load reduction component automatically—we’ve gotta get that wood from somewhere, and once it’s underwater, that carbon is safely stored for decades to centuries. Need help getting ready for fire? We’re happy to help.
Project Management And Consulting
Simple is not easy.
Having built over a hundred miles of fully-connected, high quality riverscape, we’re only now in a position to say, “we might be able to help with your specific site needs”. Process-based restoration really is that complex, nuanced, site-specific and time dependent.
If you need a hand with site selection, project planning and design, logistics or leadership in the field, we’ve likely dealt with something similar, and want to be sure your build succeeds. Just let us know what you’re working on.
Thought Leadership & Public Speaking
Every field season out in the big scratchy yields some high quality suffering, type 2 fun, some hilarious moments, a few profound life lessons, deep human and landscape connection, and the kind of tribe-building experiences available nowhere else.
Long on big picture story-telling, maybe a little short on science and dry charts, I might be able to add some color and wildness to your restoration nerdfest and get people thinking differently about our role as planetary stewards. Poke me in the ribs.
